How can I set up URL or Email forwarding for a domain name?

If you have registered a domain with MEDIASERVE, but are not hosting it anywhere, you may want to use URL or Email forwarding.

In order to use either of these services, you must:

1. Have DNS Management for URL redirection, and if you plan to use it, Email forwarding enabled for the domain. To check for this, log in to your account, click the MY DOMAINS tab at the top of the page, then click the "View Details" button next to the domain you wish to check. If URL forwarding is enabled, you'll see a "DNS Management" button. If Email forwarding is enabled, you'll see an "Email forwarding" button. If the button corresponding to the function you want to perform is not available, please submit a support ticket to request it.

2. Once the appropriate features have been enabled per #1 above, you also must set your domain's nameservers to the following values, understanding that if you currently have any hosting set for your domain, (whether with us or elsewhere), it will be disrupted by this change:

dns1.name-services.com
dns2.name-services.com
dns3.name-services.com
dns4.name-services.com

To set the above nameservers for your domain, while logged in to your account at http://www.mediaserve.com, click the "Manage your domain names" link under "Customer menu" on the left, then click the "View Details" button next to the domain name you wish to adjust, and in the "Nameservers" section of the domain details you'll see the current nameservers listed. Change the current values to those above, and click the "Save Changes" button.

Once the above steps are performed, use the information below depending on which type of feature you wish to configure:

Email forwarding

In order to support email forwarding, you must have the proper MXE DNS record created. Click the DNS Management button for your domain as documented in #1 above, and create the following MX record:

Host Name: mail
Record Type: MXE
Address: 209.19.56.20

From that point on, email forwarding is fairly straightforward. Simply access the "Email forwarding" button as mentioned in #1 above. The information on the email forwarding page is straightforward and easy to use. If you have questions, submit a support ticket.

URL forwarding

URL forwarding also requires the creation of certain DNS records for your domain. Click the "DNS Management" button referenced in #1 above, and create at least two records for your domain:

Host Name: @
Record Type: URL Redirect (or URL Frame)
Address: The full URL to which you want your domain to redirect, beginning with http://

Host Name: www
Record Type: URL Redirect (or URL Frame)
Address: The full URL to which you want your domain to redirect, beginning with http://

The @ record will ensure that if someone visits your domain in a web browser without typing the initial www, they'll still redirect to the proper location.

The "URL Redirect" record type will forward the user's browser to the address you specify.

The "URL Mask" record type will cause the user to see the content from the address you specify, but your domain name will remain in the browser address bar.

You may also be able to redirect a domain by creating CNAME records for @ and www, pointed to the hostname of the location where the domain should be hosted.
