This short tutorial is designed to help you begin broadcasting quickly. For the purposes of this guide, we assume you have already installed any necessary hardware, and have installed the Microsoft Windows Media Encoder software. Step 1 - The New Session Wizard
The first step is to launch the Microsoft Windows Media Encoder. Unless you've previously done this and have unchecked the "Show this dialog box at startup" option, the New Session dialog (see picture above) will automatically display. Select "Broadcast a live event" if not already selected, and click the OK button. Step 2 - Device Options
This is the first step of the New Session Wizard. Choose the hardware which will provide the source of the audio and/or video broadcast. Click the Next button. Step 3 - Broadcast Method
By default we configure your publishing point for the Push method. Select the Push option as noted in the image above. Click the Next button. Step 4 - Server and Publishing Point
You need to connect the encoder to the server and publishing point we provisioned for you. You can find this information in the instructional e-mail we sent. Only the Server name and Publishing point need to be entered, leave the Copy settings from field alone, and do not check the Remove publishing point automatically option. Press the Next button to proceed. Step 5 - Encoding Options
This is one of the most important steps. Pick the bit rate at which you want to encode. If you want to support an audience made up of both broadband and dial-up internet users, you should broadcast in two or three different bitrates, picking a rate around 40 kbps for dial-up users, and higher rates for broadband users. The audience members' Windows media players will determine the best bitrate to play depending on connection conditions. Once you've chosen the bitrate(s), press the Next button. Note that you can also press the Finish button at this point and begin broadcasting immediately, skipping steps 6 through 9. Step 6 - Archive File
If you want to allow visitors to your site to listen to or view your broadcast at a later date, use this step to specify a file to which the Windows Media Encoder will store the broadcast session. After the broadcast, you can upload this file to your web site, or to an on-demand streaming account, for on-demand playback. Click the Next or Finish button. Step 7 - Display Information
Enter information about the broadcast which you'd like to make available to the audience members' Windows media players. Click the Next or Finish button. Step 8 - Settings Review
Review the settings you've chosen, pressing the Back button to make any necessary adjustments. Check the Begin broadcasting when I click Finish option if you'd like the broadcast to begin immediately after completion of the New Session Wizard. Once you've confirmed that your settings are correct, click the Finish button. Step 9 - Broadcast Password
The media server will prompt you for your username and password. These are provided in your instructional e-mail. Click the OK button. Step 10 - Disregard this message, it's normal
As the Windows Media Encoder connects to the server to begin broadcasting, you'll likely see this dialog box. It's totally normal, and can be disregarded. Check the Don't show me this again option to prevent this dialog from displaying during subsequent broadcasting sessions. Step 11 - You're broadcasting!
If you checked the Begin broadcasting when I click Finish option in Step 8, you're now broadcasting! If not, you'll need to press the Start Encoding toolbar button.
