Can I use a third party email service with your hosting?

Yes, the email service we provide can be replaced with your own internal company Exchange or other mail server, or a third party service, using one of the following methods:

MX Record Modification

If the external mail service you use provides you with one or more mail exchanger (MX) hostnames, you can use the MX Entry icon within the website control panel to replace the default MX record with your own. Note that this will cause email to be handled by the third party service, but the mail hostname, (mail.yourdomain.com) will still point to us. You will need to use the third party's webmail system or a hostname or IP address provided by the third party to access your incoming mail via pop or imap, and our outgoing mail by smtp.

DNS Record Management

If your external mail server has no hostname, or you want to point your mail hostname (mail.yourdomain.com) to it, you will have to manage your own DNS records. Many domain registrars, including us, provide a DNS records management service for your domain. DNS management is a $5.00/year addon to our domain registration. If you do not already have DNS managment enabled on your domain, submit a support ticket to request that we calculate a pro-rated charge and enable it for you. If your domain is registered elsewhere, please contact your registrar to find out how to enable or use their DNS management service.

With DNS record management enabled, you'll be responsible for maintaining your own DNS records. See this knowledgebase article for details on the records you'll have to create to continue using our hosting.

To point your mail handling to an external mail server, you'll need the IP address of the server, and then you can create the following records:

  • An A record for the "mail" hostname of your domain pointing to the IP address of the mail server.
  • An MX record for your domain pointing to the hostname of the A record you created for the mail server.
